"God had an errand for me; to bear which afar, to deliver it well, skill, and strength, courage and eloquence, the best qualifications of a soldier, statesman and orator were all needed: for these all centre in the good missionary"(368)
In this passage, St John is explaining to Jane that he feels God has called him to become a missionary. There are christians today that feel called to do missionary work. I have a friend, who at eighteen feels called to go to the Middle East and be a missionary there. Like St. John he knows it will be dangerous but relies on his strong faith to allow him to push toward his goal. Kyle is learning the language and the the culture. Going to different countries sharing views that they are against and in some causes hate, is not a smile task. As the quote describes it takes an extremely special type of person. Eloquence is needed when trying to explain the word to people. When called they become soldiers for God and their work. The calling for being a missionary is not for the light of heart. I believe both Kyle and St. John know well what they are getting into when they answer that call and go.
