Characterization~Mrs. Reed
While Jane is dynamic character her Aunt is a static character. She starts the story being dreadful and evil, and dies dreadful and evil. After Jane protected her self from her cousin, John; who if possible is worse then his mother, Mrs. Reed blames Jane. She declares "'Take her away to the red room, and lock her in there'"(10). Jane is but a child and believes the room to be haunted. As she is in the room she has a strong passionate fit and pleads for mercy from her aunt. her aunt says "' I abhor artifice, particularly in children; it is my duty to show you that tricks will not answer: you will now stay in here an hour longer, and it is only on condition of perfect submission and stillness that I shall liberate you then'"(17). Her aunt dislikes her greatly. As time passes and Jane comes to see her aunt on her death bed. She finds Mrs. reed wholly unchanged. Jane was willing to make amends, " I approached my cheek to her lips: she would not touch it"(243). Her Aunt simply never changed.
