When Jane exclaims that St. John is killing her by asking her hand in marriage without love. He becomes very offended. In is answer he alludes to the book of Matthew . St. John says her words
"' they would seem inexcusable, but that is is the duty of man to forgive his fellow, even seventy-and-seven times'"(480). In the bible Peter asks Jesus how many times are they to forgive the sins of others Jesus replies
"'I do not say to you up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven'"(Matthew18:21-22 ). Throughout the novel Bronte does a good job alluding to multiple different works.
